When fitness trainers and parents Sharny and Julius Kieser began to gain weight after the birth of their sixth child, they felt extremely self-conscious. As fitness instructors who posted about their lives online, they hadn’t wanted to reveal that they – the role models – had gained weight.
After a moment’s pause though, they changed their minds completely.
Sharny explained, “By hiding the fact that we were getting fat, we were being dishonest. We were perpetrating a myth that fitness is a permanent state and is easy.”
The couple didn’t just share that they’d gained a bit of weight; they let themselves go and gained 30 pounds each.
Their rationale? They wanted to understand what their clients went through, and prove that their Fit Mum and Fit Dad programs actually worked.
Both Sharny and Julius have been sharing videos and updates on their public Facebook page of their weekly weigh-ins, but have also established a more private Facebook group for their followers to share their personal stories.
The couple’s main selling point is the fact that their fitness programs factor in children’s presence and parents’ lack of time to dedicate solely to working out.
Thus far, Sharny and Julius have completed two weigh-ins and admit the experience is an eye-opening experience. “Addictive eating is really hard to stop,” Sharny said, “Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying, trying to sell you something, or both. But after the first week, it tends to become habit.”
