A new study conducted by researchers at France’s University of Grenoble suggests men who eat more spicy foods have higher levels of testosterone, which in turn makes them more "adventurous." Their studies also conclude that eating more chilis could raise levels of testosterone.
Researchers measured testosterone levels of 114 men ages 18 to 44 via saliva samples, according to the Telegraph, then gave the men a plate of mashed potatoes and asked if they’d like to add chili sauce.
They found that the men that added the most chili sauce had the higher levels of testosterone.
"This wasn’t much of a surprise," said study author Professor Laurent Begue, because testosterone influences men to try new things. "In this case, it applies to risk-taking in taste. It is also possible that the regular consumption of spicy food contributes to increasing testosterone levels, although so far this has only been demonstrated on rodents."
The conclusions was that the amount of capsaicin (the compound that gives chili peppers their signature kick) correlates with how likely he is to take risks, dominate social circles, and exude sexual prowess.
The study authors explain that "conversely, low testosterone levels have been associated with lethargy or depressive mood."
Entitled “Some Like It Hot,” the study will be published in US scientific journal, Physiology and Behavior.
