With Memorial Day just around the corner, most of us are already dreaming of the three-day weekend, sunny skies—and a big barbecue to top it all off!

Barbecuing during Memorial Day weekend is practically an unspoken rule for Americans to signify that the beginning of summer is almost here.

It’s always hard to resist scarfing down all that barbecue chicken, ribs, and creamy potato salad, but it’s about 10 times harder when you’re on a diet.

If you want to enjoy your Memorial Day barbecue without undoing all those long hours you’ve been putting in at the gym, then you’re in luck!

Here are 7 incredibly easy ways to lighten up the calories at any barbecue this weekend:

  1. Cut the calories in any potato salad by replacing all that fattening mayonnaise with olive oil and red wine vinegar. Try this delicious recipe for Warm Red Potato Salad on the blog Saveur.
  2. Swap sour cream for non-fat Greek yogurt to give your creamy dips a healthy kick, without sacrificing any taste. Try this Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt dip from the blog How Sweet It Is.
  3. Slash the sodium in your favorite salsa by adding fresh fruit and jalapenos to give your guests the sweet and spicy combination they’re craving. Try this Strawberry Mango Salsa from the blog Damn Delicious.
  4. To really take advantage of those healthy dips, replace the bag of salty chips with some crunchy sliced veggies, like carrots and cucumbers. Just a dash of fresh lime juice, salt, and chili powder will give your veggie platter a nice touch of flavor!
  5. Make low-fat guacamole by replacing one of the avocados with frozen peas. The sweet flavor gives this unlikely mix just the kick it needs! Try this Lighter Guacamole on the blog In Fine Balance.

  6. Create your own lettuce-free salad with fresh fruit and veggies, so your guests don’t have to chew on wilted greens. Try this zesty Greek Salad from the blog Serena Bakes Simply From Scratch.
  7. Grill fresh, filling shrimp kabobs to give your guests a lean protein that packs just as much flavor as any high-fat meat. Try this Chipotle Lime Grilled Shrimp on the blog Closet Cooking.
