In this day and age, it’s pretty surprising that scientists still haven’t figured out a way to create the world’s healthiest food, complete with every vitamin, mineral, and nutrient under the sun.
While health experts can’t agree on which food truly is the best, it’s hard to find anybody who doesn’t think olive oil is up there on the list of healthiest foods out there.
Just one tablespoon of olive oil every morning can do wonders for your body. In fact, many researchers have linked olive oil to lower rates of cancer, obesity, heart disease, and more!
Just in case you really need more convincing, here are 4 life-changing ways olive oil can improve your overall health:
- It may help you lose weight: Combined with veggies, lean protein, and high-fiber foods, olive oil has been shown to help boost metabolism for optimal fat burning. Because this magical elixir is packed with healthy fats and powerful antioxidants, olive oil can give your body just the kick it needs to start burning more calories.
- It can help build your immune system: It’s no secret that extra virgin olive oil is heart healthy, which means it can help lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol. What you might not already know is that the polyphenols in olive oil also help strengthen your body’s natural immune system. Regular use of olive oil while cooking can even lower your risk of stroke by as much as 41 per cent.
- It can help protect against Alzheimer’s disease: According to a study in The Journal of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, regular use of extra virgin olive oil in cooking can help reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This may occur because the Oleocanthal in extra virgin olive oil can alter the structures of the highly toxic proteins, called ADDLs, that bind to nerve cell synapses when the disease first starts to develop.
- It may lower your risk of cancer: Scientists believe that a number of different compounds making up extra virgin olive oil can work to prevent, or slow, the growth of breast cancer cells that have been known to cause tumors. Though more research still needs to be done, some scientists suspect that certain compounds found in olive oil actually inhibit the creation of specific proteins that help cancer cells grow. Olive oil also protects cells from becoming damaged, which may result in faulty replication that causes cancer.
