It’s only 3 p.m. and you’re already dreaming of your bed. With at least two hours to go until you can even think about lying down, you’re probably planning on grabbing another cup of coffee to recharge.

When we feel tired and sluggish, most of us turn to caffeine or sugar to give us that little afternoon pick-me-up we need.

These solutions may sound like an easy quick fix, but they can have lasting damage on your health. Too much sugar and caffeine now can result in a major energy crash later.

What’s worse, when you finally are ready for bed, that extra cup of coffee might just keep you up for hours!

Instead of fighting your fatigue with energy drinks and candy bars, fuel your body back up with energy-boosting foods.

Here are 5 nutrient-packed foods that can help your body recharge, so you’re ready to take on the rest of the day:

  1. Bananas: Packed with potassium and B vitamins, bananas can help keep your blood sugar levels stable, so you don’t suddenly crash midday.
  2. Almonds: With tons of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, a handful of almonds is the perfect go-to snack that provides you with sustainable energy throughout the day.
  3. Yogurt: High in calcium and protein, yogurt is an excellent low-fat snack to reach for when your energy levels feel like they’re plummeting fast. Plain Greek yogurt is your best bet if you’re trying to watch your waistline, since it’s also low in sugar.
  4. Lean Meats: Skinless chicken, lean pork, lean beef, and turkey are all packed with healthy fats and tons of protein to give your body the strength it needs to get through the day. These lean meats also contain the amino acid tyrosine, which boosts the levels of two brain chemicals: dopamine and norepinephrine. When these chemicals are released, you tend to feel more alert and focused.
  5. Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, arugula, chard—these flavorful greens are packed with tons of healthy vitamins and minerals that can provide your tired body with an instant energy boost. They also contain high levels of folate, which increases energy and has been known to help fight against depression.

Do you have any energy-boosting foods to add to the list? If so, tell us in the comments!
