Starting out the morning with a sugary doughnut can keep you on a sugar loop for the rest of the day. First you feel energetic, then you crash, then you eat more sugar, and the cycle continues.

Aside from weight gain and constant cravings, too much sugar can leave you feeling sleepy, fatigued, and sluggish.

That said, we all know how hard it is to get rid of a sweet tooth. After all, chocolate can help you feel happier…right?

We all crave sweets every once in a while, but if you think your little candy habit might be turning into a full-blown addiction, here are a few important tricks to curb the cravings:

  1. Eat More Fruit: If you can’t stop eating sugar, then you might as well give your body some healthy, sustainable sugar. Seriously, simply adding raisins to your morning oatmeal or strawberries to a bowl of yogurt can provide you with just enough healthy sugar to help kick the cravings to the curb.
  2. Chew Some Gum: Pretty much any craving will subside after you chew a piece of minty gum. If you really want to go cold turkey, chew a stick of gum every time you think of grabbing a bowl of ice cream.
  3. Take A Walk: Watching TV on the couch is never going to take your mind off of the box of cookies in your pantry 20 feet away. When a craving strikes, get up and move. Not only will you feel more productive and energized, but you’re also getting a little exercise in.
  4. Don’t Starve Yourself: The most effective way to fight cravings is to make sure you’re never hungry. Fuel your body with healthy protein and filling fiber, so you don’t feel weak later when you’re walking past the candy aisle at the store.
  5. Always Choose Quality: Chances are, you’re never going to cut sugar out of your life. But, if you’re not giving into temptation all the time, you should at least splurge when you do. After a full week without chocolate, don’t waste your one treat on a candy bar from the grocery store. Eat something delicious and satisfying that actually feels worth it.
