Vitamin D deficiency is a more common problem than you think. One billion people worldwide are suffering from vitamin D deficiency, which is unsettling when you learn that vitamin D deficiency can more than double your risk of high blood pressure and diabetes. But sometimes it can be hard to detect. If you have these symptoms, it may be time to talk to your doctor about getting more D in your diet.
Your muscles are suddenly weak. Even if you’re doing everything right to get those gains, a lack of vitamin D can still take you out. Vitamin D is important for muscle power and strength, and without it, you can be left feeling fatigued and weak after a workout that’s usually pretty normal for you. Getting enough vitamin D will improve your muscle control and give you more muscle power at any age.
You have chronic pain. Some people with vitamin D deficiency can experience chronic pain known as osteomalacia. In fact, some sufferers of arthritis or fibromyalgia may be experiencing osteomalacia without even knowing it. Even if you’re not experiencing chronic pain, adequate vitamin D can help with post-workout muscle soreness and can help your muscles recover faster.
You’re sweating for no reason. This is one of the easiest symptoms to notice. If you’re at rest, your temperature is normal, you’re not in a hot environment, and you’re still sweating, it may be time to find out if you’re vitamin D deficient. A lot of the time, those without enough vitamin D sweat on their heads.
You’re depressed. Studies have shown that Vitamin D may work in the same areas of the brain that affect mood, and may impact serotonin as well. Vitamin D is sometimes used in treatment of depression for this reason.
The good news is, if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you can get rid of most of them by just supplementing your diet with more vitamin D. Unlike a lot of vitamins, most people need a combination of food, sunlight, and supplements to get their recommended amount of vitamin D.
