Even if you love your leafy greens like I do, sometimes you really just would rather be eating bacon. I know that there are times when I crave the stuff. But then you tell yourself the things that you know to be true: bacon is unhealthy, healthy foods are good for me, if I had a plate of bacon actually in front of me I probably wouldn’t want to eat it anymore anyway. Right?
Well, it looks like you may not have to compromise anymore. There’s a new seaweed in town, and it’s called dulse. It’s red, it’s more nutritious than kale, AND the best part is…it tastes like bacon when it’s cooked.
It’s existed for a while, growing off the coasts of the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines, being used as a nutritional supplement. But now, these researchers from Oregon State’s Hatfield Marine Science Center may have discovered a strain that can be farmed and sold commercially.
They discovered this strain while trying to develop dulse to feed abalone. But then they discovered that, when fried, it naturally tastes like bacon.
That’s right, none of this candy-grape-taste-infused apple or cotton-candy-grape stuff. This food actually, naturally tastes like bacon. One of the researchers said, “This stuff is pretty amazing. When you fry it, as I have done, it tastes like bacon, not seaweed. And it’s a pretty strong bacon flavor.”
These researchers feel like the seaweed has enormous potential to make it big commercially. I don’t know about you, but I’d be all for a food that tastes like bacon and nourishes like kale. I think there would be no trouble at all getting everyone, not just health nuts, on board with this stuff.
Would you try this bacon-flavored seaweed?
