There are some ingredients that can seem like they are healthy upon first inspection, but once you do your research, you find out they really aren’t that healthy. Such ingredients can make their way into foods that may be labeled as healthy or organic. You expect those types of foods to be safe and good for your family, but if the manufacturers are including such ingredients, then it is left to you to be the watchdog.

The main ingredient in question these days is carrageenan. This is derived from red seaweed, which is why some people may think it is fine. It seems natural and seems like it would be healthy. The problem with carrageenan is that it can cause inflammation in the body, which is not healthy and can lead to obesity, heart disease and cancer. Carrageenan has also been linked with GI disorders. It is banned in the EU but is perfectly legal in the U.S. and often found as a thickener in ice cream, almond and soy milk and baby formula. You have to read labels to ensure you aren’t buying products that contain carrageenan.

Staying alert is the only way to stop your family from consuming this potentially harmful ingredient. Make sure you check out the foods your regularly buy for your family and find alternatives that don’t contain carrageenan. Before buying a new food item, check the label. Only you can make sure the food your family eats is safe.
