Exercise is a great way to get your endorphins going and making you happer in your life.

So it makes sense that it would be good for those without homes. After all, those who experience homelessness experience dramatically reduced self esteem and depression, as well as feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Enter Back on My Feet, a nonprofit that helps the homeless literally get up and running.

Anne Mahlum started the organization back in 2007, when she asked a local shelter if she could start a running club for their men.

They get running gear from donations, and the running clubs are managed by volunteers. They run or walk three days a week before dawn and track their progress with each run.

And according to the people in these clubs, it inspires them to live.

After all, the executive director of the Boston chapter stated that their mission is to improve “the wellness of the individual.” And that’s just what this organization does.

Now, eight years later, they provide not only running clubs in several cities, but also nutrition programs, yoga, and self-advocacy programs.

And that’s still not all. Those who participate in the wellness aspect of the Back on Your Feet program for 30 days are eligible for job training workshops and are given access to job opportunities.

They’re seeing results. Almost half of their members now have secure employment and/or housing.

Fitness doesn’t just power your body, it powers your mind and your well-being. The members of Back on My Feet know that better than anyone.
