Some people will do anything to save money. This includes not just people, but companies looking to save money on manufacturing.
Millions of rice consumers in Asia discovered this recently, when it was discovered that some Chinese manufacturers had been making rice out of plastic.
And now, there’s even more news of strange material masquerading as rice. This time, it’s tiny rolls of paper.
One patron from Guangdong, named Cai, found these tiny pieces of paper when they were eating dinner. She bit down on a handful of hard grains. She took one out, inspected it, and found she was able to unroll it.
She got this “rice” from an independent street vendor that she buys from often and trusts. She said that he believed the rice was organic and came from a local farm. She wants to stress that it wasn’t the fault of her vendor, who may not have even known that the rice he was selling was anything other than rice.
Of course, dangers like this shouldn’t be something that anyone has to experience. And the worst part about these stories of rice, both paper and plastic, is that neither of the perpetrators have been found. For all we know, these manufacturers are still out there, selling fake, undave, choking-hazard rice to unsuspecting vendors and consumers.
It’s worth it to always be careful when buying food from vendors are companies you don’t trust. It may be useful, even necessary, to begin making a habit of checking your rice thoroughly, and inspecting any company or vendor you may not be familiar with.
After all, no one wants to be cheated out of their rice!
What do you think of this crazy story?
