Hopefully the myth that coffee is bad for you has mostly been dispelled by now.

But there are even more benefits to it that go beyond simply being your morning pick-me-up. Here are just a few things that coffee can do for you that could even save your life.

  1. You get your fill of certain nutrients. Coffee beans are rich in nutrients like vitamins B2 and B3 and potassium. These nutrients keep your systems functioning properly, and keep your immune system strong.
  2. You’ll be smarter. Coffee can improve your memory and your reaction times. In fact, that’s what caffeine does in general. So if you need to concentrate, coffee is your healthy go-to.
  3. You’re less likely to have heart problems. That is, if you’re female. One study found that drinking coffee regularly can reduce women’s risk for heart disease.
  4. You’re more protected against diabetes. In one study by the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that people who increased their coffee intake to over one cup per day over foud years were at 11 percent less of a risk for type 2 diabetes than those who did not.
  5. Your risk of cancer is lower. An astounding four or five cups of coffee per day was found to lower coffee drinkers’ risk of colorectal cancer by 15 percent. That’s nothing to sneeze at.
  6. You’ll feel more awake. Okay, this one is obvious and we already pointed out, but it’s true. A cup of coffee or a shot of espresso, on its own, with no cream, sugar, or syrup, is one of the purest, healthiest ways to get a caffeine fix throughout your day.
