Although nails are often painted or manicured to look pretty, and can be useful in helping open things, they are there for more than people realize.
There are actually many ways that looking at fingernails and toenails as a sign of overall general health.
Nails are essentially dead cells, called plate cells, which grow from the matrix of the nail bed.
When the matrix makes new plate cells, it pushes the dead plate cells up and out, meaning that the tips of your fingernails actually contain the oldest cells.
When a nail becomes deformed or discolored, it can often mean that something is wrong in the matrix of the nail.
This means you can look at the problem in your nail to find out problems in your body that need addressing, such as a diet change.
For example, Beau’s Lines are a rippling in the nail that forms when the matrix stops making new cells for a while.
The indentation marks where the growth temporarily stopped. The main reason for the matrix to stop making new cells would be if it wasn’t getting enough nutrients in the bloodstream, which could happen if the person recently had an infection that caused the nutrient flow.
