Yoga is trendy these days, and there are plenty of Instagram posts that advertise it as glamorous and elegant.
But for anyone who’s done yoga, you know that it doesn’t always feel that way. More often, it feels awkward, strenuous, or unnatural.
It’s still a lot of fun and has all of the benefits anyone would think of, but it’s definitely not without effort.
This photographer knows that, and he wants to get rid of the stigma that surrounds yoga. His name is Jonah Sargent, and he’s trying to make money to Kickstart a book about it. He knows that you don’t have to look good when you do yoga, he says, because nobody looks good doing yoga.
He believes that people on Instagram who do “sexy yoga poses on beaches” have made people afraid to practice yoga, and wanted to debunk the myth that these are the only people who practice yoga.
He wrote on his Kickstarter page: “When I first started yoga, I was constantly distracted by how I looked and felt during class and I think that’s why a lot of people don’t try it…It’s important to remember that we all look bad when we do yoga, so we should immerse ourselves in it and forget the rest.”
He took the most awkward shots he possibly could, and said he only kept the ones that made him feel the most uncomfortable. The faces range from spaced out, to pained, to euphoric.
But one thing is for sure, no one really cares how good they look in any of them. It just goes to show that yoga is for anyone and everyone, regardless of how they look.
