Caring for an infant is a precious time in the lives of their family and friends. Children grow and change so quickly.

The temptation to take a multitude of photos is only normal. Capturing those moments before they pass can develop a sense of urgency.

Plus, who doesn’t love to look at baby pictures? In today’s world of social media, these images can be shared with loved ones around the world.

However, an unfortunate incident in China caused an infant to suffer permanent eye damage because of a seemly innocent photo. The flash from the camera left the child completely blind in one eye and caused reduced vision in the other.

The photo was taken at least 10 inches from the child’s face but the photographer forgot to turn off the flash. It was immediately noticed that something was wrong with the baby’s sight.

The doctor said noted that the camera’s flash was the culprit of the vision damage.

The damage was done to the newborn’s macula, which focuses the light that goes into the eyes. This function is not fully developed until a person is four years old.

Exposure to any sort of strong light can cause lifelong vision problems.

Parents should exercise caution with any bright lights around their young children.
