If you’re a fan of the bubbly stuff, there’s good news for you.

Drinking three glasses of the stuff every week could help you reduce your risk of dementia.

If this sounds a little bit questionable, don’t worry, there’s reasoning behind it.

The University of Reading did a study a few years ago that found that rats who were given small amounts of champagne were better at simple memory tests than those who did not.

The memory-improving properties are said to come from a compound found in Pinot noir and Pinot meunier grapes, which are used to make champagne and sparkling wine.

It’s possible that it could prevent the onset of brain diseases, as well as improve spatial memory.

The test was done on rats, but it performed so well that they’re hoping to expand their research to humans as well. They hope to carry out research on pensioners.

Lead researcher Jeremy Spencer told the Mail, “The results were dramatic. This research is exciting because it illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory.”

Of course, like any preliminary research, this doesn’t mean you should go out and drink champagne three times a week from now on. Much more research is needed.

In the meantime, though, there are lots of other ways you can cut down on your dementia risk. You can play brainteasers, like simple ones that you can get in apps on your phone.

Regular exercise, of course, is the most effective way to stave off dementia. There has been extensive studies about it, and they’ve all found that exercise can reduce your risk of dementia by 60 percent.

So put aside the bubbly for now and go for a brisk walk.
