EOS Lip Balms are well-known for their colorful egg-shaped cases, fun flavors and…the allergic reactions they cause?
The super popular lip balm, sold in stores like Target and chain pharmacies such as CVS, is being sued by customers who claim the product causes major damage to their lips and the skin around their mouths.
Rachel Cronin has filed the suit, claiming her reaction to this product, whose brand ambassadors include Britney Spears and Kim Kardashian, was HORRIBLE.
According to TMZ, “Within hours of applying the balm, her [Cronin’s] lips felt like sandpaper, so she applied it again. She claims her lips started cracking, flaking and bleeding, creating blisters and rashes which lasted 10 days.”
Her lawyer, Mark Geragos has filed this suit asking for damages and demanding corrective advertising.
Dermatologists believe that the issue with this popular lip product is with the flavoring in addition to the beeswax base, which is an allergen to many people.
The reaction caused by EOS lip balm is called Recurrent Lip Rash, or Cheilitis, according to Diana Hermann, an acupuncturist.
In an Inquisitr article she says, “The general condition of inflamed lips is called cheilitis and the symptoms can include lip swelling, redness, itchiness, stinging/burning, oozing, crusting, peeling, and/or flaking. Cheilitis can develop in patients with Crohn’s disease, it can develop after chronic sun damage (solar cheilitis) or it can result as an allergic reaction to certain drugs.”
Cheilitis is caused by allergic reactions to flavorings such as Vanillin and mint, which is in several flavors of EOS lip balm, as well as beeswax, which is the base of EOS Lip Balm.
Beauty blogs and websites have been complaining about the EOS Lip Balm for over a year.
Blogger “Monica Loves Makeup” said of the product, “I’m probably like everyone else because I loved EOS lip balms. However, a couple months ago I started to get VERY chapped lips. Of course, I kept applying EOS because I thought it would make it better. Not only were my lips chapped, but I had a lot of dryness around my mouth as well. I stopped using my EOS balms and used Vaseline instead. It took a good month or two to completely heal up.”
Yikes.
According to the Inquisitr, the best thing you can do if you see a reaction to a product like this is to discontinue use IMMEDIATELY. Then, rinse your mouth with a mild soap and water. You can also apply a non-irritating lip product like Aquafor. If the condition persists, see your doctor because you may need a stronger ointment.
