They see cases like this all too often…
When they received phone calls about a dog that was left abandoned on the side of the road, Kings SPCA-Rescue of Lemoore sprang into action.
After hours of waiting for the dog—later named Banjo—to approach them, one member of the rescue group decided to write a powerful message to the dog’s former owner who had left him to die.
The message is addressed to "the callous POS owner of this dog," and goes on to explain how the Kings SPCA-Rescue worked tirelessly to rescue Banjo, who did not deserve to be dumped on the side of the road.
"He waited for you," the letter continued. "He hadn't left the place you made him stay. He was being a good dog. He stayed close to the last place he saw his favorite person in the world. He thought you were coming back. He was watching every car that would come down the road hoping it was you coming back for him. Your dog has been freezing, hungry and scared for days because you are a heartless piece of crap."
Shelter manager Darlene Laboc told TODAY that they knew that Banjo had been abandoned opposed to being a runaway because, “Runaway dogs don't migrate to one area, they keep going. So from our experience, when someone dumps a dog, that dog waits there.”
Kings SPCA believes that the dog had been tied to a post he broke free from by his former owner who abandoned him.
They think Banjo was outside for five days before he was rescued. He'd been dropped at a rural intersection out where nobody lived.
Luckily, good Samaritans had been keeping the dog alive by tossing him food and eventually calling the Kings SPCA-Rescue.
The shelter says they posted the message about Banjo because it “struck a nerve.”
"We're just so tired of people doing this," Laboc said. "It's just heartbreaking, when you're around it every day and you hear the stories of why people want to get rid of their dog, it's horrible. We just don't get it."
The shelter worker concludes her scathing message to the abusive former dog owner by saying, “I don't care who you are or your excuse as to why you abandoned my dog. It's probably a BS reason anyways. You are a scum bag. I pray your year is filled with karma and bad health.”
Thanks to the efforts of the Kings SPCA-Rescue, Banjo’s story will have a happy ending. The sweet dog will be adopted soon!
"I spoke to a lady from San Francisco yesterday who's interested," Laboc said. "A lady from Nebraska already put in an interest card. She said she's willing to drive all the way from Nebraska to give this dog his loving home. We've had people call from New York, all over the place."
