Women often think it’s funny—or annoying—to hear just how much their husbands seem to complain every time they catch a little cold.

But new research says that the so-called “man flu” is actually a real thing—not just a myth that ladies love to make fun of.

According to scientists from Harvard University, men naturally have weaker immune systems than women due to a lack of the female sex hormone estrogen in their bodies.

In the study, published in Life Sciences medical journal, a simple dose of estrogen was able to cure both male and female mice of bacterial pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses.

Professor Lester Kobzik at the Harvard University School of Public Health said female mice demonstrated increased resistance to infection because of the release of estrogen.

Scientists hope that this new knowledge will help improve resistance to common lung infections and stop the flu before it develops into pneumonia.

For men around the world, this is a huge breakthrough, finally proving to women that the “man flu” is, in fact, a real medical reason to be babied.
