Prepping and cooking all your own meals at home will always be the simplest way to keep your family (and your wallet!) healthy and happy.

That’s why it’s so important to stay on top of every kitchen tip and shortcut you can possibly use in a pinch.

Here are some of the most incredible kitchen hacks you’ll wish you knew sooner:

  1. Egg Freshness: It seems nearly impossible to know for sure if your eggs are still good, even if you crack all of them! Here’s an easier trick: Place an egg in a bowl of water. If it sinks to the bottom, it’s still good. If it floats, toss it immediately!
  2. Grate Cold Butter: If you need softened butter while baking, it’s such a pain to wait for your ice cold stick to get started on the recipe. Next time you’re stuck with a super cold stick of butter when you need it most, try grating it into a bowl first. It’ll be so much easier to spread and bake with!
  3. Freeze Leftover Sauce: Next time you make too much pasta sauce, pour the leftovers into an ice cube tray. When you need a little extra sauce, you can easily unfreeze as many cubes as you need.
  4. Peel Garlic: Instead of wasting what feels like hours peeling garlic, try this trick: Smash the garlic with a hard ceramic bowl, place cloves into a tubberware container, shake, and separate—that’s it!
  5. Soften Ice Cream: If you hate eating rock hard ice cream, simply place your new carton into a sealable plastic bag before putting it in the freezer. This should keep your delicious ice cream perfectly soft and creamy.
  6. Yogurt Pops: You can super easily make your own yogurt pops with nothing more than popsicle sticks. Simply poke the popsicle sticks through each individual prepackage yogurt (as long as they have soft tops) and place them in the freezer.
  7. Chill Wine: There’s nothing worse than overly warm wine—and it’s always frowned upon to water your glass down with ice cubes. Solve this problem quickly by using frozen grapes as ice cubes instead. Not only are frozen grapes delicious snacks, but they’ll never water down your wine.
