After saying she’d never met an obese person who was happy, Australian Biggest Loser trainer Michelle Bridges is under fire for making such insensitive remarks.
"If you are happy where you are, more power to you," the professional trainer said during an interview with Australia Story that aired Monday night. “But I can tell you, I'm yet to meet someone who is morbidly obese and happy."
Bridges’ hurtful words come just after The Biggest Loser's creator, J.D. Roth, told Cosmopolitan.com that people who weigh 600 pounds or more seem to "have a level of darkness in their lives that most people just can't understand."
For many people, implying that morbidly obese individuals simply can’t be happy is both uncalled for and completely untrue.
On Twitter, people all over the world called out Bridges for what she said during her recent interview.
“If Michelle Bridges wants to meet a happy fat person I'm more than available to hang out and educate her,” @jocelynseip tweeted.
“If obese people aren't happy maybe it's largely because of people like Michelle Bridges incessantly forcing public shame on them?” wrote Alyssa Robinson.
Even people typically considered thin attacked Bridges’ for grouping all “obese people” into one unhappy category.
“Dear #MichelleBridges I am a size eight, I have met plenty of plus size people who are happier than me, you are a sanctimonious cow,” @BundySandy tweeted.
So far, no word on how Bridges responded to the backlash.
