After eating one avocado every day, a thin young woman suffered a serious reaction that caused her to look pregnant.
23-year-old Anna Rhodes, from east London, was actually offered a seat on the underground train earlier this year because her stomach was so swollen that other passengers thought she was pregnant.
“Someone on the tube asked if I was pregnant and wanted to offer me their seat. I was mortified,” she told student newspaper The Tab. “At the time I didn't realise I was intolerant to large stone fruits like avocado.”
Before figuring out what was going on with her body, Anna had actually started an “exclusion diet” in hopes of pinpointing exactly what had been causing her to bloat.
She’d already tried cutting out dairy and gluten before realizing that avocado was what had been behind her discomfort all along.
“Every day I would eat around three quarters of an avocado and chicken,” Anna said. “My stomach was really bloated and I was in a fair amount of pain, I looked like I was having a baby.”
Like most women her age, Anna had become addicted to avocado when famous models and celebrities first began touting its health benefits.
“Everyone is so interested in avocado, why are we obsessed?” Anna questioned. “I think the health benefits and celebrities started eating them while on health kicks.”
“When all the models were starving themselves, we all did that and now we're eating avocado and quinoa, just like them,” she added.
In the end, Anna had to cut avocado from her diet completely for five long months before she finally returned to her slim UK size 8 clothes.
Now that Anna knows avocado is her trigger, she limits herself to just one a week.
