A high school in California was nearly on the verge of a massive health crisis after dozens of students were sickened with food poisoning during a rally.
On Thursday, San Benito High School seniors were treated to a huge on-campus party, filled with delicious food.
As district superintendent John Perales explained later, it’s a school tradition for all students that are part of the Future Farmers of America club to cook a meal for the seniors as part of the “Finale Rally.”
Unfortunately for this year’s seniors, the FFA had prepared a number of tri-tip sandwiches the day before many of the soon-to-be graduated were all set to board buses and head to Disneyland for their Grad Night trip.
According to KSBW, just a few hours after departing for Disneyland the next morning, buses carrying approximately 350 students were forced to turn around when as many as 80 students suddenly fell violently ill.
"It is with much regret that I inform everyone that under the direction of the Medical Director of the San Benito (County) Public Health Department we have canceled the senior grad trip to Disneyland due to widespread stomach and intestinal illness. Students will be refunded the cost of the trip," Perales said in a message to parents.
According to health officials, it is believes that the tri-tip sandwiches gave dozens of students pretty serious food poisoning.
On Friday, San Benito County Public Health Department spokesperson Sam Perez said that county health officials are expected to be on campus to treat the seniors once they return home.
When asked whether or not the food poisoning incident could have been intentional, Perales said he hopes that’s not the case.
