A woman suffered horrific burns all over her body after oil in her hair accidentally caught the flame of a candle.
Jeairy Segarra-Veras was just 15 when her hair caught fire from a candle during a power outage and changed her life forever.
“My hair lit in a second,” she recalled. “My hair, entire head, shoulders, back and hands were on fire.”
“I was screaming and my mum woke up. She turned on the shower to extinguish the fire, then wet beach towels to cover me,” Jeairy continued.
After the freak accident, Jeairy was left fighting for her life in a coma for three excruciating weeks before she was finally released.
Now 32, Jeairy is determined to show the world that her life-changing scars help give her “a story to tell.”
While Jeairy tries her best to remain self-confident for her two daughters, that hasn’t stopped cruel strangers from putting her down time and time again.
“I feel bad for people who comment on how I look,” she said, according to The Daily Mail. “I feel like maybe they feel bad about themselves and they're projecting that on me. How I look has never been an issue for my girls. They just see me as their mum.”
Since the accident in 1998, Jeairy has undergone more than 175 invasive procedures to minimize the damage caused by that one candle so many years ago.
Now that she’s a happily married mom of two beautiful girls, Jeairy hopes to show others that even the most horrific accident can’t stop you from living your life to the fullest.
