46-year-old mother Theresa Hohenhaus had watched her daughter, Alice, suffer a lot as a child. When Alice was just four years old, she was diagnosed with leukemia and struggled to completely fight off the disease until she was nine years old.

By then, her radiation treatment had ravaged her body, leaving scar tissue on her uterus that would make it impossible for her to carry a child to full term.

Now 25, Alice wanted nothing more than to start a family, but was physically unable to do so.

When Theresa realized what this meant for Alice’s future, she immediately offered to be her daughter’s surrogate. Alice already had fertilized eggs; all that had to be done was implant the embryos in Theresa’s womb.

“I thought I was too old and Alice didn’t want me to do it at first but I had already almost lost Alice twice before...” Theresa said of her decision. “Making her happy and seeing her happy now is worth it.”

The mother-daughter pair went to and did everything together. From the moment Theresa suspected she was pregnant with the implanted embryo, she told Alice. “Every appointment and scan from then on we went together and cried together… we are very very close,” Theresa recalled.

Theresa’s grandson and Alice’s son, Parker, was born on June 2nd. Every moment of the unique birth was captured on camera, and even the photographer was having a hard time fighting tears in the delivery room.

The photographer, Selena, said, “As a mum myself it was one of those things that really spoke to my heart and the birth was so amazing to witness. I shed a tear or two myself and I really just can't put it into words, the atmosphere was electric and filled with emotions of relief and complete joy.”

Theresa and Alice have already been discussing the possibility of Theresa being a surrogate again.

“People are worried about the effort but I am in good health and it would be so lovely for Parker to have a brother or sister…” Theresa said.

Until then, mother, son, and grandmother are all resting together and united as one family at home.
