The Transportation Security Association (more commonly known as the headache at the airport, TSA) has a program where it trains dogs to sniff out bombs in airport terminals. Unfortunately, like with the guide dog and service dog programs, some of these pups end up failing their explosive-detecting training and are ultimately not qualified to become bomb-sniffers.
Fortunately for us, however, the dogs who flunk are then put up for adoption.
It’s been a while since TSA posted their open invite to all potential dog owners to come adopt a dog from their training facilities in San Antonio, Texas (they posted this back in November 2015), but a representative at TSA says the adoption program and process is still ongoing.
Interested? Here are the details:
You will probably be able to find German Shorthaired pointers, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, and Belgian Malinois. All of these dogs will be between two and ten years old, are extremely active, and will require a bit of “training.”
Though they’ve gone through formal training for service, these pups may have some initial trouble interacting with a family because they were raised in kennels. You might have to dedicate some time “retraining” your new four-legged family member how to get along with everyone else in your house.
