People only made the discovery last week.
An 80-year-old mother in Brooklyn, New York, has lived with the body of her dead son decomposing in her body for the past eight years, and it’s unlikely that she would have told anyone about this herself.
A family member went over to the woman’s house last week to gather some personal belongings when the elderly mother had to be hospitalized.
That was when the family member discovered the body in one of the bedrooms.
“She went to the second floor bedroom and that’s when she noticed a dead body – completely decomposed skeletal remains – on the floor,” reported a New York City Police Department spokesperson.
The family member immediately contacted the police. Medical examiners were sent over to remove the body and begin examination.
The skeleton had belonged to a man who died at the age of 43. Police currently speculate that this skeleton belongs to the woman’s son – who hadn’t been seen for the past eight years.
Google Earth confirms that the man’s car hadn’t been moved in eight years; street view shots from 2007 show the car in the same place as those available online today.
This son had reportedly been estranged by his family and was also terminally ill.
Everyone, from the police to the woman’s neighbors, are perplexed. No one understands why the woman didn’t report her son’s death when it first occurred, which leaves some neighbors quite suspicious.
One of them said, “She never said hello. She always walking down the street with a grocery bag [and] she would walk looking down. Something about her always seemed a little weird.”
The autopsy results are still being developed, and until then, his cause of death will remain unknown, as well as this mother’s fate.
