116-year-old Emma Morano from Verbania, Italy has less than one month until she turns 117. Morano only recently took the title of being the world’s oldest person in May, after the former titleholder passed away.
Morano’s doctor, Carlo Bava, is extremely pleased with how Morano is doing. It’s not just her longevity that’s impressive; it’s also her resilience.
“Despite everything she always recovers,” Bava told media AFP (Agence France-Presse) news agency. “When she is well, she really is well.”
Morano credits her longevity to spending most of her life single, not being “dominated” by anyone else. She’s been single ever since she divorced in her 30s.
When AFP news agency asked Morano if perhaps her diet also helped contribute to her long life, Morano answered simply, “I eat two eggs a day and that’s it. I eat cookies.”
She clarifies, however, that she eats her two eggs raw. Decades ago, her doctor told her that eating raw eggs would help her anemia, so she’s been doing it since.
While this might have helped Morano achieve her old age, we’re not sure the rest of us have quite the stomach for this sort of thing – which is probably why very few of us live to be as old as Morano.
You can watch a brief interview of her here, and wish her a happy birthday later this month!
