A ten-year-old girl in Russia was recently admitted to the hospital after she reported feeling intense pain in her stomach, accompanied by dizziness.
After some investigation, doctors discovered that the girl had a massive buildup of hair in her stomach.
Because this girl had “difficult” relationships with her classmates at school, she’d developed a nervous habit of chewing at – and ultimately eating – her hair.
Over time, the hair had collected in her stomach, causing a blockage to her bowel – and resulting in her intense pain.
Surgeons operated on the girl’s stomach and removed, length by length, a 23-inch-long hairball from her abdominal cavity.
The head of the general surgery department wrote in a report later, “This case has been the first in decades of work of our pediatric surgeons.
“Now the girl is in a satisfactory condition, her intestinal permeability has been restored, and she is recovering and will soon go home.”
Doctors have now issued a warning to parents to keep an eye out for these nervous behaviors to avoid having this problem occur with their children.
