64-year-old David Hardy was shopping at a Tesco grocery store in Manchester, England with his wife when the incident took place.
Hardy’s wife, Elaine, was called by a coworker, who was also shopping at the time, to see the adorable newborn baby of one of her neighbors.
Amy Duckers had just given birth to her second daughter, Elsie five days ago, and was grocery shopping with her older daughter and her partner.
Elaine and Hardy both went over to see the baby.
As the women were gushing over the “beautiful baby,” however, Hardy abruptly swung his fist out, hitting Elsie straight in the face.
Her mother, Duckers, lifted Elsie’s hat and “saw a red mark the size of an egg.”
Hardy apparently apologized, first saying that he hadn’t hit the baby, then later explaining, “I thought it was a doll.”
Duckers didn’t buy this. “He didn’t even look in the trolley, just looked over and hit her. He hit out with his right side with a clenched fist in her face. She was in the car seat. He didn’t even look in,” she said at the trial.
Everyone heard the sound of his fist connecting with Elsie’s head. Duckers’ elder daughter was “hysterical.”
Elsie was taken to the hospital and received several hours of care and will recover.
As for Hardy, he admitted that he did hit Elsie, but he pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault against him.
We haven’t heard the court’s final decision yet.
