On November 3, Thursday afternoon, a squirrel entered a Deltona senior center and began attacking several residents and center employees.

The attack had begun outside. The squirrel first bit a woman who’d been sunning herself outside the center. When the animal latched on and refused to release its bite, the woman ran inside the building to ask for help.

It was only inside the building that the squirrel released its bite – only to launch itself onto other people, scratching and biting three, four, or even more residents inside.

On the 911 call, a center employee reported that the squirrel was in their “activity room.” “It’s jumping on people and biting them and scratching them. We need help,” she said.

In the background of the three-minute call, people can be heard asking each other if they’re okay. One woman says she feels “light-headed.” Another has uncontrollable bleeding that can’t be stopped, even after applying pressure.

The emergency response team sent over ambulances just after someone had caught the squirrel and thrown it back outside the building.

Thus far, no one has reported any symptoms of rabies and the three bite victims who were sent to the hospital have been cleared and released.

The squirrel has yet to be caught.
