A woman from Oregon, Hayley (also known as royallyoily on Tumblr) has just sent her amputated toe to another woman, Lana, in Massachusetts, to have it more properly preserved.

26-year-old Hayley had the digit amputated about ten years ago because of her brachymetatarsia, a condition that caused the bones in her toes and feet to stop growing.

“As I got older the skin around my toe began to get infections and tear open…and it would cause me to not be able to even walk at times,” Hayley explained. “I was constantly in pain ... At age 17, a doctor said he’d help me the best he could and removing the problem seemed simplest ... He removed my 4th toe.”

Hayley kept her removed digit for so long because of “spiritual reasons.” When she passes away, she wants to be buried or cremated with her entire body – including her amputated toe.

Doctors originally preserved the toe in a jar of preservation solution that would last until 2011. Hayley had always had intentions to repackage her toe, but once she met Lana on Tumblr, she changed her mind on how she wanted it redone.

Lana enjoys making jewelry in her spare time and wrote about her excitement, “I’ll be changing the solution, putting it in a new pretty jar, and potentially making it into a wearable pendant.

“Taking on this project is so super meaningful to me, more so than any other jewelry project i’ve [sic] taken on, including the engagement ring. I’m so appreciative of her trust in me, and I’m so excited to get to work on this!”
