Law enforcement authorities in Georgia released a terrifying 911 audio recording of a young girl desperately calling for help. She told the dispatcher that she was inside a car being driven by her drunk father, ABC News reports.
The girl, who’s 9 years old, can be heard saying, "Hello, is this 911? ... The only person that's here is my dad and he's drunk. My dad is drunk. Help me, please! Help me!"
The 911 call, which was 17 minutes long, was made last Sunday afternoon. The little girl, who can’t stop crying, informed the dispatcher that she and her father were traveling to St. Simons Island in Georgia. According to police reports, her younger sister was also present in the car.
According to the girl, the family is from Atlanta. At first, she thought that her father was just going to drive both of them to her grandparents’ house. The dispatcher had a hard time understanding what the girl was trying to say due to the fact that she was terrified and sobbing the entire time.
The girl said, "I don't know where we're going. He's driving really fast. ... I think I'm going to get into a wreck," she says. "I think I'm going to get into a wreck and kill myself. ... I don't know where I am right now. Daddy, stop the friggin car! Stop the car. Pull over somewhere!"
The girl was able to provide the address of her grandparents’ house to the dispatcher. The dispatcher, then, directed police to the house. They found the whole family there, safe and sound.
According to the police report, the father was identified as 36 years old Wesley Burgner. Police officers confirmed that was “visibly intoxicated.” Burgner was drinking alcohol as soon as the family left Atlanta up until they reached St. Simons Island.
The police report said, Wesley had slurred, slowed speech, had trouble standing, had trouble formulating sentences, stumbled when he walked and smelled of an alcoholic beverage. Wesley admitted he had been driving."
Burgner was arrested and charged with driving under influence, endangering a child while driving under influence, and driving on a suspended license. He had been held at the Glynn County Detention Center.
ABC News reports that the daughters were not hurt. Hopefully, this would serve as a warning not only for parents and guardians, but also for every adult who was given the responsibility of ensuring a child’s safety.
