If you’re a faithful Sargento Cheese customer, this news might make you cry. Sargento, one of the United States’ largest cheesemakers, is recalling many of its products out of fear that they have been contaminated by listeria.

Included in this list of affected products are the company’s Ultra Thin Sliced Longhorn Colby as well as Chef Blends Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese. The company fears there is “a potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes.”

Listeriosis, the infection caused by eating food contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes, can be incredibly serious and potentially fatal for women who are pregnant or older people who have weaker immune systems.

Early symptoms of infection include fever, muscle pains, and sometimes even diarrhea and other stomach problems.

About 1,600 cases of listeriosis are reported each year in the United States, and 260 of these cases result in the patient passing away.

If you’re starting to panic, it’s okay to relax still.

On its website, Sargento has confirmed that there have been no illnesses reported thus far. The recall was issued because one of the company’s suppliers in Indiana warned them that the Longhorn Colby cheese had a chance of being contaminated.

All of these cheeses were later packaged in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Other cheeses that were packaged in this same facility have also been affected by the recall. Sargento doesn’t want to take any risks in this situation.

Other products that have been recalled are Sliced Colby-Jack Cheese, Sliced Pepper Jack Cheese, Chef Blends Shredded Taco Cheese, Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Colby-Jack Cheese and Off The Block Shredded Fine Cut Cheddar Jack Cheese.

For a full list of the affected products, double check the information on Sargento’s official site.

To make certain that your package of cheese is one of the ones that have been potentially affected, also double check the UPC packaging code for confirmation.

In the wake of Sargento’s mass recall, Taylor Farms has also recalled about 6,630 pounds of its chicken and pork salad products. The company also fears these products have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes because the salads include cheeses that are produced by Sargento.

The list of affected Taylor Farms products include their "Signature Cafe Southwest Chicken Premade Salad," "Signature Café Southwest Style Salad with Chicken," and "H-E-B Shake Rattle & Bowl Rowdy Ranch Hand.”

The US Food Safety and Inspection Service added that the Taylor Farm salad products were shipped to be distributed in Los Angeles and Tracy, California; as well as Portland, Oregon; and Houston, Roanoke, and San Antonio, Texas.
