After a 1-year-old baby in Ohio overdosed on an opiate, the infant’s 9-year-old sibling allegedly called 911 while their mother fled the scene.

According to FOX 8 News, the baby is currently in stable condition and recovering at the hospital after the shocking ordeal.

Authorities say they arrived at the child’s home around 6:30 p.m. after receiving two calls from the residence.

Police have since announced that the first call was made by the child’s mother, who hung up before providing dispatchers with an address.

The second call was made by the baby’s 9-year-old brother, who finally gave police his address and stayed on the line as he attempted to ask his mother about CPR.

Fortunately, when paramedics arrived to the scene, they were able to revive the baby with Narcan.

Lt. Rick Edwards, with the Akron Police Department, praised the baby’s brother for taking initiative when he did.

"He's a hero. He did everything he can do and anything we'd expect. But at this age its heartbreaking to put the 9-year-old in that position where you have to call police and paramedics for 1-year-old," Edwards said.

The 9-year-old boy later told police that he saw his baby brother playing with a small baggie that had white residue in it.

Authorities have now sent the baggie in for testing to determine what opiate the baby was holding.

The children's mother, Destaine Carter, quickly fled the scene, but she reappeared later when she went to visit her baby at the hospital.

Police say they have since arrested Carter on at least one outstanding theft warrant.

At least three children found in the home are now in the custody of Summit County Children's Services.

FOX 8 has since shared this heartbreaking story on Facebook, where many commenters praised the little boy for saving his brother’s life.

“Breaks my heart that a 9 yr old looked for guidance from his Mother in a terrifying situation and got nothing ! I pray him and his sibling get moved with responsible adults and never returned to this nonparent !” one woman wrote.

“Take those kids away and never let her have the opportunity to hurt them again. What type of "mother" doesn't get their child help, let alone why did you let your kid play with that crap. I can't imagine what the kids must be thinking now seeing their mother cared so little that it was put on them to save their sibling. My prayers are with those kids,” another added.
