We all know someone who has self-identified as a "gym rat," but how much exercise is too much exercise? When has it stepped over into the realm of addiction?

Exercise addiction can cause the same chemical reaction in the brain as recreational drugs--there's a sudden rush of the feel-good chemicals in the brain that then lead to a euphoric feeling.

Not only that, but those that experience this addiction can feel anxious, depressed, or even have withdrawals without their fix at the gym. When it starts to interfere with their professional, personal, or internal life, that's when it has become a problem.

This should not be yet another excuse not to go to the gym--the average adult needs at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity (also known as cardio) every week. That includes running, walking, skipping, rock climbing, hiking, cycling, or kickboxing.

Not to mention, less than one percent of the population has this addiction--so it's unlikely that you are one of them.
