We all know the old saying: an apple a day will keep the doctor away!
Well, according to new research, that might not be exactly true. Turns out, they might not keep the doctor away, but they will definitely keep prescription drugs away!
Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Ann Arbor found that, after analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, people who ate at least one small apple per day enjoyed a few more health perks than those who didn't.
While they didn't necessarily spend any less time in the hospital or in the doctor's office, they did take fewer prescription medications. They were also less likely to smoke cigarettes and tended to be more educated.
While this is fascinating (and honestly, not that hard to believe), there was one glaring flaw in this research study. The questionnaires only asked what the participants had eaten in the last 24 hours, which does not provide an accurate view of their day-to-day diets.
Still, there are plenty of reasons to love apples; not only are they packed with Vitamin C and fiber, they're also great for weight loss!
Understandably, eating apples by themselves can get boring after a while. If you still want to enjoy the health perks of apples but you want to liven up the way you eat apples, you should try this amazing "Apple Sandwich" idea!
The idea is simple: core an apple, and cut two horizontal slices (this is your "bread"). Add some peanut butter, granola, chocolate chips and sprinkle on some coconut. It's incredibly filling, and perfect for a mid-morning snack!
