Regretting the four shots of tequila you had last night? Well, good news—it might actually help you lose weight!
According to Mexican researchers, specific sugars found in the plant that makes tequila could help lower blood glucose levels for people with type 2 diabetes and aid in weight loss for those struggling with obesity.
The natural type of sugar that makes tequila, called agavins, is made from the agave plant. These particular sugars—which are not the same as agave syrup—are non-digestible and do not raise blood sugar, the researchers say.
In the new study, the scientists gathered a team of mice and fed them an average diet, with an added boost of agavins to some of their water.
Overall, the mice that drank the water with agavins ended up eating significantly less and had lower blood glucose levels than the mice that didn’t.
When compared to other artificial sweeteners, like agave and aspartame, the researchers said the effects of agavins were much stronger.
Even better, the mice consuming agavins also produced a powerful hormone called GLP-1, which has been known to keep the stomach feeling full longer and produces insulin.
“This puts agavins in a tremendous position for their consumption by obese and diabetic people,” the study authors wrote. “We believe agavins have a great potential as a light sweetener.”
Like any alcohol, too much tequila can have some pretty unpleasant side effects, like (obviously) a pretty nasty hangover the next morning.
But, if you’re looking for a little something extra to help control your nighttime hunger, a shot of tequila may just be the trick you need!
