Being a healthy eater means stocking your kitchen with delicious fruits and tons of colorful veggies, but it’s tough to find affordable produce that also happens to be free of pesticides.

While the debate on the effects of pesticides is still up in the air, it’s safe to say that you should always try your best to limit your exposure to these toxins.

According to the Environmental Working Group, most fruits and veggies are grown with pesticides to reduce your risk of consuming sneaky insects.

Because pesticides are essentially used to kill living things—bugs, weeds, etc.—you don’t want them in your gut.

But before you run out and spend a fortune on top-of-the-line organic produce, we have a much simpler, more affordable solution to make your fruits and veggies free of pesticides.

Just give your produce a quick vinegar bath!

Not only does white vinegar easily get rid of pesticides, this versatile elixir also kills off 98% of any harmful bacteria that may be lingering behind on your fruits and veggies.

Getting started on your very own vinegar wash is a piece of cake:

  1. Add three parts water and one part white vinegar into a spray bottle and mix the solution around.
  2. Spray the DIY pesticide killer on any fruits and vegetables in your kitchen.
  3. Rinse produce with water to wash away any vinegar residue.

Don’t have an empty spray bottle on hand? No problem! Here’s another vinegar wash method:

  1. Fill a bowl with water and add about ½ cup of white vinegar (less if you’re using a small bowl).
  2. Place produce in the bowl and let soak for around 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Remove fruits and vegetables from the bowl and rinse with cold water.

Both of these white vinegar bath methods are so quick and easy that there’s no reason you should ever have to worry about consuming pesticides in your own home again!
