Few things are more frustrating than dealing with a tough, inflamed, painful hangnail. Not only do they catch on literally everything, but they’re impossible to remove!

Hangnails can be caused by just about anything, from dry skin and synthetic soap allergies to biting and vitamin deficiencies.

In most cases, hangnails are more annoying than anything else; however, when left untreated, it can lead to a painful infection.

Next time you have an uncomfortable hangnail, treat it fast with one of these simple home remedies:

  1. Honey: The easiest way to combat hangnails is by preventing them first! Keep your nails soft and moisturized by rubbing raw honey around your cuticles once a day.
  2. Yogurt: Because yogurt is a natural probiotic with amazing anti-inflammatory properties, it can speed up the healing process whenever you have a pesky hangnail. Once you’ve covered the affected area sufficiently, let it sit for about an hour and rinse with cold water.
  3. Epsom Salt: A really painful hangnail needs to be cleaned and treated immediately. Try immersing your hands in a bowl of warm water with Epsom salt for about 15 minutes. The salt will instantly soften your hands and ease the pain caused by the hangnail. After drying your hands, massage antibacterial ointment into the affected area and cover with a bandage.
  4. Turmeric: Just a tiny bit of turmeric can help prevent your hangnail from infecting your skin. Heat a small amount of turmeric in some mustard oil and cover the hang nail with the solution. For the best results, leave the paste on all night and cover it with a bandage.
  5. Petroleum Jelly: Everybody has a jaw of Vaseline sitting at home! Dab a small amount of petroleum jelly around the hangnail, cover your finger with a bandage, and let the Vaseline work its magic while you sleep!
