In recent years, we’ve come across plenty of strange dessert trends, like the famous edible balloons in Chicago or cronuts.

But would you ever try charcoal ice cream?

Since last year, plenty of health gurus have touted the health benefits of activated charcoal, which many people have already tried incorporating into their detox drinks.

Now, thanks to Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream, you can get all the activated charcoal your heart desires—all while you gorge on ice cream.

According to Mic, the New York City hot spot recently debuted its “Coconut Ash” ice cream, a black sweet treat made with charred remains of coconut shells, a form of activated charcoal.

While many health experts believe this coconut-flavored ice cream may contain detoxifying properties, others are convinced that this whole activated charcoal nonsense in nothing more than a fad.

“As for nutritional benefits, there is no research to support any of the health claims for activated charcoal,” said Keri Gans, R.D., author of The Small Diet Change.

So, is this jet-black ice cream really worth your time? If you’re a huge fan of coconut, then feel free to give it a whirl!

But if you’re just trying this “detox ice cream” as a healthy alternative to regular ice cream, then don’t waste your time.

At the end of the day, ice cream is still ice cream. So, if you’re going to eat it, then you might as well pick a flavor you’d actually enjoy!
