With all the DIY tips out there, you’ve probably been tempted to put a few bizarre homemade products on your face.
But some of these “natural” skincare ideas just aren’t worth the risk. Here are a few things you should always avoid putting on your face:
- Body Lotion: Love that lavender body lotion you just bought? It might work wonders on your legs, but the skin on your face is definitely too sensitive for that perfumey scent. Unless you want to break out into red blotches and tiny bumps, then it’s best to steer clear of body lotion when it comes to your face.
- Hair Serum: Just because that glossy cream makes your hair feel silky and smooth that doesn’t mean it will do the same for your face. The ingredients and fragrances typically found in hair serums are too strong for your skin, especially the sensitive areas around your face.
- Hair Spray: There are a lot of makeup bloggers who claim that hair spray has a great staying power that works as a cheap alternative for setting your makeup. But they’re so, so wrong. Most hair sprays are full of lacquers and alcohol that are way too harsh for your skin. Plus, do you really want to walk around with sticky skin all day?
- Hair Dye: Plenty of women like to dye their eyebrows to match any new hair color, but it may be risky for those with sensitive skin. It’s much better to color your brows with a temporary alternative, like tinted brow mascara or a brow pen.
- Deodorant: Many runners apply deodorant between their thighs to keep their legs from sweating and chafing. You may be tempted to try the same quick fix on your face to keep your makeup from melting, but then your skin won’t be able to breathe. Not to mention, trying this will clog your pores with flaky deodorant.
- Mayonnaise: Plenty of people have been using mayonnaise for DIY hair masks in the last few years, but this stuff is way too thick for your face. Again, this is something that works wonders on dry hair but will absolutely clog your pores.
- Vinegar: While vinegar has been used as an effective toner by many beauty bloggers, it’s best not to try this idea at home. Over time, vinegar actually loses water and becomes more potent. This may dry and irritate your skin. It’s much better to buy a toner that contains the ingredient than trying it straight from the bottle in your kitchen.
