Kaitlyn Shelton, 18, was wandering around her neighborhood in Gladstone, Missouri, playing Pokémon Go with her sister, boyfriend, and some of her friends when the unthinkable happened.

The driver of a turquoise or teal Dodge Caravan ran onto the sidewalk, driving right into Shelton.

Shelton fell, face down on her 38-week pregnant belly, her sister recalled. “I honestly did not know if my sister was alive or dead at that point,” Ashley Shelton said. She also had no clue if her unborn nephew would survive.

According to Ashley, the “van reversed some more and ran [Shelton’s] legs over,” before finally driving off.

Shelton’s boyfriend helped pull her out from beneath the car and immediately called for medical help.

At the hospital, the doctors immediately began treating her for her injuries and performed an emergency C-section to rescue her son.

When Shelton woke up, she was in a complete panic, imagining that the worst had happened to her child. She remembers regaining consciousness in the hospital and saying, first thing, “I need to get my baby out…”

Thankfully by that point, her son, Joshua Miles, had already safely been born.

Shelton is grateful for both her sister and her boyfriend’s support during the traumatic incident, and is slowly recovering in the hospital with her son.

She, her sister, and her boyfriend all hope the driver is caught soon.

“I want the person to be caught for everyone else. That way, nobody is hit and left on the side of the road like I was,” Shelton explained.
