Matt and Danielle Davis had been married for seven months when the accident happened. Matt was riding his motorcycle when he got into a severe accident that put him into a coma and forced him to go on life support.
The doctors advised Danielle to take her husband off life support; there was a 90% chance he would never wake up again.
Danielle, however, refused to listen. She took him home, and with the help of her mom, took care of Matt – even though he showed no signs of improvement.
Three months later, Danielle’s efforts paid off.
Matt woke up and told her, “I’m trying.”
The coma and accident had caused Matt to lose three years of his memories. He didn’t remember marrying Danielle at all, but when he was reminded, he said, “I’m sure glad I married her.”
After Matt woke up, Danielle did her best to provide her husband therapy and treatment at home. She tried her best to copy what she’d seen his therapist do at the hospital by holding up a toy motorcycle in front of Matt and asking him to grab it.
The day he managed to grab the bike successfully, Danielle knew it would be the start of a long, slow recovery.
Much of Matt’s personality had been dulled by the accident, but Danielle knew it was still intact when he told her once that he wanted a “buffalo chicken wrap from Cheddar’s.”
Not long afterward, Danielle and her family sent Matt to a rehab program for another two and a half months, and he was able to leave the center on his own two feet.
Matt can now drive a manual car and play Scrabble with his wife, but he’s still not completely back in-tune with his body. Danielle does her best to practice yoga with him, to help him feel more at-home in his own skin, and does her best to provide him with love and support.
