While most mothers can expect to deal with some type of picky eater among their children, mother Lindsay Hives has a particularly unique case in her family.
Her son, Tyler Hives, is 11 years old, but he has almost exclusively eaten canned beans and cheese for his entire life.
Tyler was born premature and spent much of his early life in the hospital being supported by a feeding tube. A terrible mishap with it, however, scarred Tyler to the sensation of chewing and swallowing any type of food.
“He just didn’t like the sensation…” Lindsay explained. “The sausage and beans in a tin were really soft and that became a safe food for him.”
For 11 years, every time Tyler asked for his canned beans and sausages, his mother would counter it by begging him to try other foods for his own health, but he would refuse.
Lindsay took her son to the doctor several times, trying to figure out if there was something she could do to better support her son’s difficulties. It was then that Tyler was diagnosed with SED, “selective eating disorder.”
Doctors, however, had little advice to offer and simply said that he “would grow out of [SED].”
This wasn’t enough for Lindsay, who was watching her son’s eating habits isolate him from many of his peers at school.
She finally decided to take Tyler to a local hypnotherapist who somehow managed to “transform” Tyler in just one session. After just a few more sessions, Tyler’s eating habits were slowly, but surely, beginning to look more normal.
“It’s completely changed our lives,” Lindsay sighed, relieved. “We can go out and have a meal without having to think twice.”
Lindsay chose not to go into detail about what precisely Tyler had added to his diet, but he said for himself, “I was just so scared of new foods. They would taste so horrible and make me sick. Now I feel so happy. I can try new food and not worry anymore.”
