Joseph Kaczkowski, a man 53 years of age, began a “cowardly, sustained, and brutal” attack on his mom, Tekla Kaczkowski, after the two had an argument regarding financial issues. Tekla, who’s blind, didn’t manage to defend herself, the Metro reports.

Joseph had to call 999, the British equivalent of 911, for an emergency ambulance for his mom. According to the call, Joseph’s voice was “calm and collected.” He acted like he didn’t know what happened to his mom and how she got the injuries on her body.

The 999 operator asked Joseph for more details on what happened during the incident. Joseph replied, “My 93-year-old mum, she’s got bruises and has hurt her leg and chest and I think she needs to go in and be x-rayed.”

Then, the operator inquired him if Tekla is conscious, to which Joseph casually replied, “Oh yeah, she has just got lots of bruising and she has hurt her leg.”

Finally, when the operator asked him on how Tekla sustained such wounds and hurt herself, Joseph took a pause, which can be construed as a sign of hesitation.

After he inhaled and exhaled with much gusto, he broke the deafening silence and said, “I don’t know, it happened in the nighttime.”

Joseph continued speaking in a very “nonchalant” tone, as described by Metro, as the operator barraged him with pertinent questions about his mom. At one point, he even said with a jolly tone, “Oh, yes!”

Jeremy Evans, the prosecutor, told the Grimsby Crown Court that Joseph “repeatedly kicked and punched his mom at her home.” She lives in Grimsby, North East. Tekla reportedly received a broken leg and multiple bruises.

The court heard that Joseph dragged his mom by pulling her arms and threw her into bed afterwards. He waited until the next morning to call for emergency.

The paramedic who responded to the call said that Joseph was “sheepish,” “reluctant,” and “remained silent and displayed no emotion.”

The paramedic then said that the injuries sustained by his mom “was some of the worst he had seen in 17 years.” Tekla was discovered to be beaten until she was unconscious by Joseph.

Joseph, without any escape or alibi to give, finally confessed. He said, “Yes, I think I’ve lost it.”

According to what had commenced in the court, Tekla’s broken leg wasn’t found until 18 days after the physical argument. Tekla had to return to the hospital herself after she felt pain in her leg.

Prosecutor Evans said, “He had angrily kicked at her bedroom door, breaking it down before removing it.”

Joseph knocked his own mother down, pushed her to the ground, and even accused her of faking it. He said that at first, he thought she was just faking the injury so that he would stop beating her.

Tekla, who’s five years away from reaching a century and a monumental achievement, told the court that Joseph was “enraged” and she had a feeling that he’s going through some very difficult battles internally.

Prosecutor Evans said, “At one stage, he put pillows and a duvet on her and jumped on her.”

This incident forced Tekla to leave the house that she had lived in for 52 years for she did not feel safe and secure inside it anymore. The injuries that she received during Joseph’s attack continued to persist, internally and externally.

Joseph confessed to what he had done to his mom. A doctor was summoned to take a look at Joseph and gave a diagnosis which stated that Joseph has chronic paranoid schizophrenia. The doctor offered possible effective treatment.

This led to Joseph receiving an indefinite detention order under the UK’s Mental Health Act.

Judge Paul Watson QC said, “Her injuries were horrific.

“She spoke of what was a completely unprompted and completely unprovoked attack after a simple argument about money and your refusal to take your medication.

“She was 93 years old. She was your mother. The attack upon your mother was indeed a horrific one and it has had a long-lasting effect on her.

“She has the terrible, terrible feeling that these injuries were inflicted on her by her own son but she still has the grace to say that she still loves you.”
