Nicola Carpenter, a 38-year-old mother, have been having suspicions that her baby son, Alec, has some life-threatening disease. So, she sought out the expertise of five physicians, but all of them ruled out that baby Alec is safe and sound.
Nicola, not entirely convinced, still kept her doubts. It wasn’t until she found a lump at the upper part of baby Alec’s leg that Nicola’s claim was proven correct. She found the lump while doing a technique she learned from a baby massage class, the Mirror reports.
Nicola then showed the lump to a nurse while baby Alec was getting his 12-week immunization injections. She was, however, rejected, and was told that she has nothing to worry about.
Nicola told Mirror, “Every time I went to an appointment I’d be asked if I was a first-time parent and if Alec’s birth was traumatic. They were suggesting that I was being over-protective.”
Nicola and her husband, Glen, took baby Alec to Ipswich Hospital, where doctors saw swelling and bruising around his eyes.
After a few more trials, baby Alec was discovered to be nursing a stage-four neuroblastoma. He was diagnosed seven weeks after Nicola discovered the lump.
Nicola said, “I was hysterical. Alec’s birth had been difficult and he was unable to breathe by himself for the first four hours. I was in such a state I called my health visitor, who made an appointment at the hospital.”
Nicola said, “Alec appeared so healthy before his diagnosis so it was a shock when the chemotherapy made him so poorly. He slept in our bed continually because we worried about him being sick in the night.”
Nicola described her son as a “cheeky little one and very social.”
She continued, “I was lucky to meet lots of other mums at classes who have been with us every step of the way, despite our friendships being relatively new.”
Although Nicola said that she nothing against those who rejected her first, she now advocates that parents should learn how to baby-massage. It could somehow let me check if there’s anything they should worry about.
