This Woman's New Fitness Campaign Is Teaching Us What Being Fit Actually Looks Like

Krista Henderson is a fitness instructor, a triathlete, and someone who has won many races. She is also, however, a plus-size woman. With her new fitness campaign, she’s trying to show the world that being “fit” isn’t just about the number on a scale.

For the past 13 years, Krista Henderson has been an active member of the triathlon community. Back in 2004, she had initially joined the community in hopes of losing weight and becoming more body positive.

Over the time it took Henderson to work up to competing in full triathlons, she discovered that she was able to constantly improve her time and performance – all without shedding a pound.

The moment Henderson realized she’d cut 20 minutes off her race time, at the same weight as before, was a game changer.

“That for me was a moment of truth. It showed how much the training really can make a huge difference. When I hit that point where I could get up on a Saturday, go race, as hard as I can, for an hour and 15 minutes, and come home and still feel great, that’s when I knew I’d hit a whole new level, a fitness I never thought I could have as a plus sized person – but it is completely possible,” she recalled in an interview.

Since then, Henderson has dedicated her time and energy into developing Born to Reign Athletics, a fitness regimen that’s not centered around weight loss, but rather, “motivating, encouraging, and celebrating” everyone’s inner athlete – particularly if someone is plus-sized, but also of all shapes and sizes.

She has also won 5 different awards for triathlons and indoor rowing competitions, and has also earned many different training and fitness certifications, like being a personal trainer and a spin instructor.

Her latest inspiring project: a fitness campaign with Lane Bryant that shows how women of all sizes can be healthy and in shape.
