A 9-year-old boy has been seriously injured after falling three stories from a resort near Walt Disney World.

According to Click Orlando, Orange County Fire Rescue responded to Lake Buena Vista Resort Village and Spa after receiving a call about a fall around 4:37 p.m.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said later that the boy’s family had been gathering their belongings to head back to Michigan, but the 9-year-old decided to stay behind in the room.

According to authorities, when a family member returned to the room to check on the boy, they heard him scream before he dropped straight to the ground.

Deputies have revealed that the boy accidentally plummeted over the balcony, three stories down.

Although the boy was alert and conscious when emergency responders arrived at the scene, he immediately had to be rushed to the hospital to be checked out.

“The child is alert and conscious and was able to get up and walk,” said Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva.

According to Click Orlando, the boy was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

At this point, it remains unclear whether or not the child’s parents will face charges for leaving him alone in the hotel room.

“As protocol, detectives have been notified and they will follow up as they see fit," Silva said.
