A female student of Outwood Academy Portland was sent to the corner of exclusion after she was criticized for wearing too much make-up on her face, the Metro reports.
Jazzmin Barr, 16 years old, was a school girl from Nottinghamshire. Her mom, Rachel, claimed that Jazzmin was “excluded” after her make-up was deemed a little too much by the school.
Rachel admitted that she didn’t check on what Jazzmin had done to her face before they left home for school. However, when she finally saw it, Rachel said that the make-up her daughter had done was barely even noticeable.
According to her mom, Jazzmin used a small portion of foundation, eyebrow pencil, and highlighter. Jazzmin also doesn’t really wear make-up when she goes to school. This was an isolated incident
Rachel said, “When she got in the car, I was like, ‘Is that it?’ I was expecting her to be in full makeup but I could hardly tell she was wearing any unless I looked closely. Jazzmin has regular attendance and rarely gets detention. She is not a troublemaker.”
She continued, “She only had minimal makeup. The older pupils are allowed to wear makeup as long as it is discreet, which is what it says in the student planner.
“If they just gave her a detention then I would have told her to just take it and get it over with but to exclude her for a day and half in a GCSE exam year, I think is a bit excessive. It is ridiculous to think she has been excluded when you see the makeup she had on.”
A spokesperson for the Outwood Academy Trust released a statement in response to the incident:
“While we will not comment on specific students, the academy clearly states in its behavior policy, ‘noticeable make-up is not allowed and any make-up must be discreet’.
“This guidance is repeated within the students’ planners. No student is excluded for wearing make-up.
“They are, however, asked to tone down any noticeable make-up and will be excluded for failing to follow this reasonable request.
“Any students attending the academy wearing make-up not considered discreet is given the opportunity to remove it.”
The school’s planner stated that “false eyelashes are not allowed. Any make up worn by older students should be very discreet. Students will be asked to remove make up if it is not discreet.”
Jazzmin was also barred from attending her school prom because she took two days off of school. She had to because she was being bullied at school and had to take a long break.
